Now that we’ve seen the Kindle Fire, the big question: Is it an iPad killer?
The simple answer is no.
If you’re in the market for an iPad 2, looking to tap into apps or play games, you’re not necessarily going to grab a Fire instead. That’s because the new high-end Kindle has a screen that’s small for video, Amazon’s Android marketplace is nascent, and the Fire doesn’t have a built-in microphone or camera for capturing video or audio.
This isn’t to say the Fire won’t have any impact on Apple (NASDAQ: aapl) or the iPad. It will. Consumers who are looking for a media consumption device will now have a low-cost option from a trusted brand. The question is whether a significant percentage of people who were planning to buy an iPad will go for a Kindle Fire instead.
Probably not.
But this could doom the field of tablet also-rans like the BlackBerry PlayBook, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab. They were already struggling; while Apple shipped 9.25 million iPads last quarter, RIM shipped just 200,000 PlayBooks (NASDAQ: rimm) and Motorola (NYSE:MMI – News) shipped about a half million Xooms. (Samsung is doing a bit better with the Galaxy.) If you’re not going to get a $500 iPad 2, why would you buy an Android competitor that costs just as much … when you can get one that costs less than half ($199)?
You know who needs to really worry about the Kindle Fire, though?
Google (NASDAQ: goog). That’s because Amazon (NASDAQ: amzn) has taken Google’s Android operating system and co-opted it for its own purposes. Up to this point, Google has maintained control over the Android ecosystem through apps like Google Maps, mail and Google’s Android app store, the latest versions of which are available only to licensees who play by the rules. What Amazon has done, though, is use its own resources to build up a version of Android that doesn’t rely on Google’s support.
Why is this dangerous for Google? Right now it seems likely that at year’s end, Amazon will have the most popular Android tablet on the market. That means developers who are targeting Android tablets probably will start developing for Amazon’s Android app store, not Google’s. Why is that a problem? Google’s entire business premise behind Android is giving away the software to get people hooked on Google services (and viewing Google ads).
The Kindle Fire potentially breaks that model.
Barnes & Noble partners with self-publisher Lulu.com
Tue 3:46 pm by Olivia D’Orazio
Bookstore giant Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) announced Tuesday it has partnered with Lulu.com, a self-publishing company, to publish Lulu.com authors’ work through its NOOK eReader.
Lulu.com founder and CEO, Bob Young said: “This partnership is another step in our passionate effort to help Lulu creators reach more readers and sell more books.
“We expect that eBooks, which represents the greatest area of opportunity for our creators, will continue to evolve rapidly and the NOOK reaches a whole new audience of readers to discover and purchase our creators’ remarkable works.”
Indeed, researchers at Lulu.com said authors who publish work as an eBook as well as a print edition tend to sell 30% more units than those who sell in print alone.
Approximately 1.1 million authors and 20,000 titles are added to Lulu.com’s catalogue each month. The company provides a publishing platform for writers in exchange for a percentage of profits from each sale.
Barnes & Noble VP of eBooks, Jim Hilt commented: “We are excited to partner with Lulu.com to bring its catalog of fantastic eBooks to our rapidly growing community of millions of NOOK owners and readers.
“Barnes & Noble is a leader in digital reading because of our commitment to bring readers new and unique eBooks by great authors that can be found with partners like Lulu.com.”
Further details of the deal were not disclosed.
In New York, Barnes & Noble shares rose 3.74% to $13.33 as of 3:36 pm EDT.

Starting off in the publishing game can be very stressful if you don’t know where to begin. I’ve done some research on self publishing because I didn’t want to be someone else’s slave. In my opinion if you are a real do it yourself type of person then you should look into self publishing. Below I added a link for those not sure where to start in this publishing game, so click on it and find what can be useful to you and let me know what you think. http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/writer-beware/pod/
